Opportunity to Join University of Virginia Study on Type 2 Diabetes

I was contacted by Rupa Valdez from the University of Virginia to help spread the word about a study they are doing via a Facebook support group.  The following information was provided to me by her and I am glad to share it with all of you Type 2 Diabetics!

Are you a Facebook user who also has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes? If so, you may be interested in participating in a University of Virginia study to understand how people with Type 2 diabetes take care of their health. The researchers intend to use the information gained from the study to help better design technologies, such as mobile apps and self-management systems, for people with Type 2 diabetes.

There are many ways you can participate in this study. The first phase will involve phone and online interviews to understand how participants use Facebook and take care of their health (36 individuals). The second phase will involve taking a survey and giving feedback in a focus group (24 individuals). In phase three, as many as 800 individuals will complete a survey generated from the first two phases. Participants involved in the interview and focus group will be compensated.

To take part in this study, you must be at least 18 years old, use Facebook, be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, and live in or be a citizen of the United States of America. All information collected in this study will be reported at the group level and will not be tied to any specific person. This study is sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and has been approved by the University of Virginia’s Social and Behavioral Sciences Institutional Review Board.
If you are interested, please visit the study’s Facebook group [https://www.facebook.com/groups/DiabetesManagementStudyCommunity] and ask to become a member.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the study’s project leader, Rupa Valdez, on Facebook or via email (DMSC@virginia.edu).
