"Apr 27, 2016 — I have decided to post the original email from Michelle Holbrook, Connie Nelson, and Katie Stewart, to show that the ONLY reason Jazzy Holman was dismissed from HIVEs was for "the severity of medical needs".
Please sign the petition, this is complete medical discrimination and cannot be allowed to happen.

"Question: Type 1's or parents of type 1's have you or your child ever been required to wash hands AFTER testing? Have you or your child ever accidentally dropped a test strip? Does your child test too much? Does your child insist on testing him or herself and want to be as independent as possible?

These are "behavioral issues" that the Curtis Center is listing as reasons for expulsion of a 23 year old girl with down syndrome from their programs. How would you feel if your child was expelled from school or other extra curricular activities for these reasons and labeled as a behavior problem without even coming to you first to bring your attention to their concerns?

The medical reasoning for their decision is based on the fact that her diabetes is worse because she got a pump this past year and she has been in the hospital for mild DKA this winter. According to them, she is too sick to participate and their center can't accommodate her medical needs.
How would you feel if your child was denied participating in a program with their friends because the people in charge who know nothing about diabetes came to those conclusions?

This is what is happening. It's not right. Please sign and share this petition as a show of solidarity that no one has the right to make medical conclusions about our child's health except our medical doctors and us as parents."

Please go here to sign and read about her story:

Reinstate Jazzy Holman to the HIVES program

"Jazzy Holman has been expelled from the HIVE's program because of her diabetes.  In fact they have hired an attorney to fight against her being reinstated.  This is a shameful act of discrimination.  All that we have asked is that she be reinstated to the Hives program.  She is heartbroken!  Here is more about the Program HIVES stands for Habilitation, Independence, Vocation, Education, Socialization, Special Needs, specifically created for "people with disabilities" and their brochure states this in detail.  The facts: Jazzy has attended Just for Kids (JFK) HIVE's, JFK athletics and when she was younger JFK Summer school.  JFK is for for kids and adults with disabilities.  She has attended for 10 years, Two weeks ago she was expelled and given 2 days notice before she could no longer attend the program because of her "serious medical issues" She has been T1D for 13 years.  Jazzy has an attorney from Utah Disability Law center (DLC).  Jazzy needs your help, Please contact anyone you know that might like to do a story. Thank you the Holmans."

Cauliflower Mac and Cheese, this stuff rocks!

No comments:
This recipe rocked our socks off last night!  I used frozen cauliflower and steamed it in the microwave vs fresh cauliflower.  Next time I will be making a double batch, my husband and I polished off this whole pan with our daughter eating a little bit of it!

I highly highly recommend this recipe.

Can eating too much sugar give kids Type 1 Diabetes?

No comments:
Some very interesting studies being done. It has been said for years that eating sugar will not give you type 1 Diabetes, and now it looks like that statement may not always be true.  If you felt safe from Type 1 Diabetes before, don't feel so safe anymore.

 http://www.dietdoctor.com/sugar-may-increase-the-risk-of-type-one-diabetes-too

"Resistance

I often meet huge resistance from parents of kids with type 1 diabetes, when discussing this possible link. Understandably so. It’s a comforting idea that type 1 diabetes has nothing to do with the environment, that it’s only fate. But the data does not support this.
Something in the environment has caused a lot more people to get type 1 diabetes in the last few decades – coinciding with the epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes. It could be the same thing driving both epidemics. A sick environment with too much refined carbs in the food supply."

"Results

In children with IA, progression to type 1 diabetes was significantly associated with intake of total sugars (HR 1.75, 95% CI 1.07–2.85). Progression to type 1 diabetes was also associated with increased intake of sugar-sweetened beverages in those with the high-risk HLA genotype (HR 1.84, 95% CI 1.25–2.71), but not in children without it (interaction p value = 0.02). No sugar variables were associated with IA risk.

Conclusions/interpretation

Sugar intake may exacerbate the later stage of type 1 diabetes development; sugar-sweetened beverages may be especially detrimental to children with the highest genetic risk of developing type 1 diabetes"

Did you read this PBS article? What’s behind skyrocketing insulin prices?

1 comment:
Quote from the article:

"One analyst, meanwhile, contended that rising prices may not have any impact on patient outcomes.

“I don’t think you can draw a straight line from the rising cost of insulin to outcomes,” said David Kliff, who publishes Diabetic Investor. “Very few patients pay out of pocket for cost of insulin. So I don’t think prices truly impact the patient pocket book. There’s only a small percentage who don’t have insurance or enough insurance.”

Who is this analyst and what country did they come from?  Very few patients pay out of pocket for insulin?  Say WHHAAAAT?  Eli Lilly does NOT offer any assistance (https://www.pparx.org/sites/default/files/resources/lilly_pp-ap-us-0096_lilly_cares_application_final_populated_jan2106.pdf) for people WITH health insurance using Humalog and some people have INSANE high deductibles and copays for insulin.  Novolog DOES offer assistance (https://www.novolog.com/copay-register.html) to people WITH health insurance, why can't Lilly?  I am personally allergic to Novolog so I am stuck with Humalog.

What do you think about this PBS article?  Let me hear your thoughts.

I created an Amazon aStore to help you locate and purchase low carb ingredients to help you manage your health and/or Diabetes!

No comments:
Amazon has the really amazing ability to create a "store" online for you to help guide others to items on their gigantic website!  It is also a really easy way for me to keep track of the things I buy and not have to search for them every time.

I live in a small rural community and not all the items I use are available in the grocery store every time and/or I do not want to travel 50+ miles to get just a few ingredients.  Amazon to the rescue!

Check it out!  I will keep adding to it as I find time to.

Teicholz disinvited from food policy panel

No comments:
To all of you who feel the current American food guidelines are a complete joke you have got to read this article and sign the petition!

Here is what Dr. Sarah Hallberg has to say on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Dr.SarahHallberg/?fref=nf

"Hi all!
Crazy news in Nutrition Science!
My friend and colleague at The Nutrition Coalition, Nina Teicholz, was just invited and then disinvited to be on a food policy panel. The other panel members threatened to quit if she (the dissenting voice to the dietary guidelines) were involved. This is not science! Dissenting views are part of the backbone of science. Two other members of The Nutrition Coalition from Harvard and Ohio State University were overlooked to replace her and instead they chose someone who works for the potato industry and used to work for the beverage industry. More of the status quo is NOT helping us! Obesity and Diabetes rates are skyrocketing and the answer is to try to silence someone who is calling for a careful review of the science.
Please read this Politico piece!

http://www.ipetitions.com/…/reinstate-teicholz-on-food-poli…
Please consider signing the petition to have her reinstated! Please share!"
