#DBlogWeek - Diabetes Blog Week - Changes

What do I feel could use changing about Diabetes.

There are so many things I don't even know where to start or what ones to talk about.

Insurance companies and their seemingly unobtainable hoops to jump through.  We have to fight for the number of test strips we want, the amount of insulin we need, the high cost of pump supplies and CGM supplies.  My daily cost to be here alive and breathing with all the medical equipment I wear broken down costs more than my mortgage payment.  I could potentially afford double my mortgage payment if I didn't have to pay so much to be alive.

The general public's' perception of Diabetes of any type and all the stigma, harassment and the extra added stress it puts on those of us living with Diabetes.  Who cares what type a person has, how they got it or who they may or may not have inherited it from.  Who cares?  They have it, its not going away there is no cure so how about the general public just offer the people in their lives' who have Diabetes their unending support instead of criticism.  Hurtful comments hurt no matter who you are, just because I have Diabetes doesn't mean for some reason I stopped having feelings.

The way some schools treat their students who have Type 1 Diabetes and the amount of harassment some of these kids have to deal with at their school.  Day after day I read about parents at their wits end who are battling their child's' school to allow them to carry the things on them that they need to live with this disease every single day.   Schools are actually fighting parents on letting their child carry insulin, Dexcom CGM, glucose tablets, candy or juice on them to manage their Diabetes.  This has got to stop!  These kids have got to feel like they are in control of their Diabetes and let them have a little bit of a normal life.  Kids get picked on enough as it is, the bullies don't need anymore ammunition to single a child out and pick on them.

Social Media BULLIES in "Diabetic Support" groups...WOW we have all seen it and left groups over it.  The groups are designed to help each other not bash and blow up at each other.  I don't even comment in very many groups anymore because getting sucked into one of those arguments isn't worth what it does to my blood pressure.  That is a terrible thing to happen because some people have really good tips/advice/strategies but are afraid to share them for fear of backlash! If you dont like the topic being discussed in a group....scroll right on by it. Its that easy.  There are so many hot topics when it comes to Diabetes groups.....how you eat, what type of insulin regimen your on, the brand of test strips you use, complications, discussing the real honest truth about Diabetes, talking about fears of future issues...I mean come on these are real things, why do we have to fight about them?

These are just a few of the things that it would be nice if they could change in some way or another.

Todays Topic: Today let's talk about changes, in one of two ways.  Either tell us what you'd most like to see change about diabetes, in any way.  This can be management tools, devices, medications, people's perceptions, your own feelings – anything at all that you feel could use changing.  OR reflect back on some changes you or your loved one has seen or been through since being diagnosed with diabetes.  Were they expected or did they surprise you?
